CARAT WEIGHT |
|
| CARAT - The Beauty Of
An A.S.G. Certified Diamond |
|
The weight of a diamond (and
gemstones ) is measured in terms called "carats" and
"points". It is simple and easy to understand. A one
carat diamond consist of 100 points. A one half carat diamond
consist of 50 points. A one quarter carat diamond consist
of 25 points. So, if your pricing a diamond that weighs
.94 carats we know that it consist of 94 points and that it
weighs just under one full carat. A full one carat diamond
weighs 1/5 of a gram and a 5 carat diamond weighs 1 gram. Today,
most diamonds and gemstones are weighed on digital or electronic
scales and the weights are very accurate.
Because the larger a diamond is
the rarer it is, as the diamond weight (size) increase, the
price increases in a progressive manner. For example, if a
1/2 carat diamond sells for $1,200.00 the same quality 1 carat
(only double the size) may sell for $3,400.00 - $3,800.00, much
more than double the price. As diamond size increases, so does
the price per carat.

| A.S.G. weight Grading
Standards |
| |
Each diamond is graded to strict
weight grading standards at the A.S.G. diamond grading center or
by certified and authorized members. Each diamond is carefully
weighed three times on an electronic or digital scale to
determine its proper classification of weight. The weight of a
diamond is never estimated. Because of the strict standards that
we employ, we can deliver consistent diamond weight
classifications that both suppliers and consumers can depend on.
The weight assigned to the diamond is documented on an
evaluation form along with other characteristics of the diamond.
The weight classification that is assigned to a diamond,
such as "3/4 carat" or "1/2 carat", is a
value that is determined and defined by the A.S.G. diamond
grading system. For example a 3/4 carat diamond consist of
diamonds that weigh between .69 carats - .79 carats. The exact
weight is placed on the evaluation. |
